These attacks went on for a year. Stiles still says that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder from them. Instead of church, she used the Internet as a way to understand, and hopefully overcome these demonic attacks. An Internet forum dedicated to fighting demonic forces is where Stiles met Tom, who she describes as “very knowledgeable about how to combat the forces, which were attacking me.” Tom then traveled from Washington State to help Courtney overcome the demons that were haunting her. She explains that when the two eventually got married, her demonic oppression had finally come to an end.

Even though this situation may sound somewhat ‘Hollywood,’ this type of marriage has been around since biblical times. Once of the oldest records of possession was in Biblical Literature, the Book of Tobit, which dates back to the second century BCE. The book is about Sarah, a woman who had been married seven times. Each time she marries a man, the demon, Asmodeus, murders them before the marriage is set in stone. Then, the hero, Tobias, exorcises this demon, and ultimately marries Sarah. (Hmm, sounds very familiar…?)

Even though, demonic possession was something that made Courtney Stiles feel hopeless and alone, her now husband, Tom, has fix that problem with the help of his exorcism expertise. Whether or not you believe in demons, Courtney and Tom’s marriage, as well as their two children, are very real.
